Blossom Underwing
Orthosia miniosa

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) 2183 / 73.243

Morley's Final Catalogue: Much confused with the next kind. Singly at Ickworth (Wrt) and Needham (L), before 1890. Flew to electric light in Ipswich on 7 April 1894 (Mly) and to sallow at Kessingland in 1936 (Gd).

Recent Suffolk Status: Immigrant and recent resident species. Historically, only odd records and not thought to be resident. In 1999, the moth was noted at many sites across the country including Suffolk, coinciding with warm winds from the continent and it was realized the species can arrive as an immigrant. Since then it has been seen much more regularly in the county, but still not thought to be resident. However, in 2023 a larva was found on Oak at Lackford (N. Sherman et al.) perhaps indicating colonization may have occurred locally.

Life history: Single-brooded.

Identification: Similar to both Common and Small quaker, but the orange colour and the pinkish tinged hindwing should distinguish Blossom underwing from those.

Habitat: Coastal sites, gardens, hedgerows.

Retained Specimen / Photograph will be Required.

Recorded in 15 (26%) of 58 10k Squares.
