Radford's Flame Shoulder
Ochropleura leucogaster

Freyer, 1831 2102a / 73.330

Morley's Final Catalogue: Not recorded in the country during Morley's time. The first British record of this rare immigrant to Britain was from West Sussex in 1983. Now appears to have established breeding colonies along the south coast, which are increasing and spreading.

Recent Suffolk Status: Scarce immigrant, possible future colonist.
The first county record was taken at 40W actinic light, at Felixstowe, on the night of 14 October 2019 (W.J. Brame). Further records have followed in the south-east of the county including one of the first generation perhaps suggesting colonization is taking place.

Life history: Double-brooded.

Identification: Very similar to Flame shoulder. Radford's flame shoulder is larger with longer wings, a clean white hindwing, the black streak extends well beyond the kidney mark and the the white streak along the costa has no small projections along its length into the dark streak. This last feature is the most obvious and crucial one to check for.

Habitat: Coastal sites.
