Coscinia cribraria

(Linnaeus, 1758) 2053 / 72.032

Morley's Final Catalogue: A very few casual immigrants have occurred in Britain, beyond it's precarious footing near Ringwood. [Not recorded in the county during Morley's time]

Recent Suffolk Status: A very rare immigrant in the county, with just four records, all relating to the rather plain white continental race arenaria with very lightly speckled forewings. This is the usual type in most parts of the continent and is very different to the resident type found in Dorset. Records have come from Thorpeness on 05.08.1965 (Austin Richardson, Trans. SNS, Vol.13 1965-67 Part 3); Waldringfield on 25.06.1973 (Alfred Waller, Trans. SNS, Vol. 16 Part 5), Bawdsey Hall on 03.08.2015 and 22.06.2020 (M.J. Deans) and Hollesley on 24.07.2022 (Many observers).

Life history: British race is single-brooded.

Identification: Sometimes confused with the pyralid circumvoluta the Thistle Ermine.

Habitat: Coastal dunes on the near continent. British ssp. bivittata now very rare on heathland in Dorset. It's former range included Hampshire.
