Morley's Final Catalogue: Alleged to have been 'generally distributed but not common. Very abundant at Playford': ante 1890. No later record is known till 1936, when Col. Hawley found the species in his Sibton garden.

Recent Suffolk Status: Resident and immigrant. Since the turn of the century this species has been arriving as a migrant in increasing numbers. It is now resident chiefly in the Sandlings and the Breck. Populations fluctuate, with good numbers seen at a site followed by periods of abscence.

Life history: Single-brooded.

Identification: Unmistakable with black wings and red collar.

Habitat: Woodland, particularly coniferous.

Recorded in 31 (53%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1936.
Last Recorded in 2024.
