Morley's Final Catalogue: Very plentiful in pupa state, two hundred dug in one week at Playford (Gr, Ent. Wk. Intel. i, 1856, pp.164, 173;ii, p.11); Woolverstone (l.c. iii, 1857, 22; v, 30). Larvae and pupae sparingly near Stowmarket (Nat. 1858, 133 and 183). Nayland; Bentley; Copdock in early June 1893 (Hkg); Ipswich before 1890; Martlesham about 1920 (D). Henham and Sotterley in 1935 (Btn); Beccles (Crf); Fritton in 1903 (Mn) and 1936 (Mr). West Stow; Tuddenham; a few at light near Barton Mills on 20 May 1934 (Ent. 1935, 81). Wangford 1937 (Baker).

Recent Suffolk Status: Common in the Sandlings and west Suffolk, sparsely recorded at other sites.

Life history: Single-brooded.

Identification: Similar Lunar marbled brown flies earlier in the year and has a distinct central lunar mark on the forewing.

Habitat: Woodland, wooded heathland, parks, gardens, hedgerows.

Recorded in 41 (71%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1893.
Last Recorded in 2024.
