Morley's Final Catalogue: Sufficiently frequent everywhere throughout east Suffolk on poplar and sallow, from Felixstowe and Ipswich where it is occasionally seen at light, through Monks Soham and Beccles to Gorleston. Remarkably, in west Suffolk, it would seem 'not met with in any stage' (Nurse, in lit. 1911).

Recent Suffolk Status: A common species and widely distributed in recent years, including records from west Suffolk. Spectacular larvae regularly found. The old, tough cocoons on Willow and Poplar trunks can persist for many years.

Life history: Single-brooded.

Identification: Compare with the similar very rare immigrant Feline at coastal locations.

Habitat: Woodlands, gardens, wetlands, parks.

Recorded in 49 (84%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1940.
Last Recorded in 2024.
