Morley's Final Catalogue: Common everywhere, from Bentley Woods to Gorleston.- The melanic form, Doubledayaria, used to be rare and was found at Ipswich in 1895 (Mly) and 1898 (Platten), but is rapidly spreading to our rural districts (cf. Trans. i, 97; ii, 275, 292); Gorleston.

Recent Suffolk Status: Very common. Both f. insularia and f. carbonaria are still recorded in the county but are not common.

Life history: Single-brooded in one long extended generation. Larvae recorded fairly frequently in the county on a wide variety of trees and shrubs.

Identification: Oak beauty has the brown bands across the wing and flies much earlier in the year.

Habitat: A wide variety of habitats including gardens.

Recorded in 56 (97%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1895.
Last Recorded in 2024.
