Morley's Final Catalogue: Local at Ipswich, Felixstow, Beccles, Herringfleet and Tuddenham in 1890. Still abundant in restricted areas in at least Oulton broad (Bedwell); Barnby broad; Shipmeadow; Burgh castle (Mr), Bradwell Doles and Blythburgh wood.

Recent Suffolk status: Very rare. Only found at a few fen sites.

Life history: Single-brooded, flying in summer, normally slightly later than Narrow-bordered five spot burnet.

Identification: Very similar to Narrow-bordered five-spot burnet. Middle pair of spots are regularly merged, whilst this is a very rare feature in Narrow-bordered five-spot. Five spot burnet has shorter forewings but this feature is subtle. Larvae of Five-spot burnet have short hairs.

Habitats: Fenland, wet grasslands.

Verification Grade Comment: Difficult to identify as adults either in the field or under the microscope
